The seventh annual Operation Game On Golf Classic was held on August 11th in Rancho Santa Fe, CA. Operation Game On builds confidence in injured troops one swing at a time, using golf as a form of mental, emotional and physical therapy. Operation Game On works in partnership with the Naval Medical Center San Diego and Wounded Warrior Battalion West, Camp Pendleton to equip and instruct hundreds of injured troops and their spouses for a game that lasts a lifetime.
Founder Tony Perez, a Vietnam-veteran himself, has used this tournament to try and give something back to the wounded men and women coming back from all wars. His vision is to establish a national “Alive Day” on August 1st in which Purple Heart recipients, and the nation, remember the day these men and women missed death and were granted a second life. Also, Tony wants to establish the Freedom Golf Network which provides affordable golf opportunities for our combat-injured troops.
Tony’s son, and PGA-professional, Pat Perez (a huge Chive/Brigade fan as well, follow him on Twitter here) has been intimately involved in the tourney from its inception. Pat actually competed in the PGA Championship (finished 1-under) the day prior to Operation Game On and flew all night to participate in the tournament. Even though he had little sleep, it didn’t show as he was extremely engaging and showed much love to the vets.
